Happy Birthday Sophie

It was my gorgeous sister in law's birthday last week, and as is traditional, I had completely forgotten and had to whip a card up quickly to get in the mail in time to reach her.  It just wouldn't be a birthday without a last minute card, after all it's not like I have all the stuff lying around ready to make cards... um, well, I probably do.  I'm just forgetful and slack.

Anyway, happy birthday Sophie!

Shabby Chic, and a Sneak Peek!

Historically I have had trouble recreating the beautiful "shabby chic" look in my cardmaking.  No matter what I did, it always ended up looking like something made in cutting & pasting time at the local kindergarten (okay, that might be an exaggeration).

So I was delighted with this card ...

I was inspired by this card at Splitcoast stampers - isn't it gorgeous? - but went a little further with my trim using the Scallop Trim Border punch.  The grungy look on the embossed layer was created by swiping my Crumb Cake inkpad vigorously over the inside of the Vintage Wallpaper Textured Impressions embossing folder - the ink caught in the edges of the design and it looks kind of worn and faded.

The colours are little washed out - the base and butterflies are Pink Pirouette, which in real life looks so pretty with teamed with Crumb Cake, Very Vanilla and Old Olive as shown here.  I also sponged the butterflies with Pink Pirouette ink to highlight the embossing on the wings.

And you might notice a little something lurking in the background there ... see the Crumb Cake shape behind the leaves?  You can't see just how pretty it is, but come next month you will ... yep, it's a new product coming in the Autumn-Winter Mini (released April 1).  Mmmm, framelits ... I am going to have so much fun with these!

Inspired by ... myself!

A week or so ago I posted a card I was particularly happy with, using the Creative Elements set.  I liked it so much I made it again to send to my darling sister-in-law (waves to Sophie) for her birthday, but this time I paired my new favourite colours Pool Party and Island Indigo.

Oh, and everything goes with Crumb Cake.  I can't recommend this "colour" highly enough.

To bling this up just a little, I added a weeny little half-pearl from the Basic Pearls set (note to self - get a pair of fine-nosed tweezers to handle these ones - the medium and large sized ones are fine, but the tiny little ones are insanely small).  It fits perfectly at the centre of the design on the butterfly's body.

Vintage Violet

I have been drawn to making softer, more "vintage" style cards lately, although sadly I don't really have much in the way of current Stampin' Up! supplies to do this with (better rectify that - there are some lovely "olde worlde" styles in the current 2011-12 catalogue).

Fortunately one of the stamp sets we received at the Stampin' Up! Convention back in May was Creative Elements, which has 8 decorative, collage-y style stamps you can mix and match for the perfect vintage look.

I've used Wisteria Wonder again (with a touch of Concord Crush) and teamed it with Crumb Cake - because just about everything looks good with Crumb Cake.  The butterfly was inked with Wisteria Wonder, then I used my Basic Black marker to colour the body and rolled just the edges of the stamp onto my Concord Crush inkpad to shade the wings a little.

And here's a closeup of the butterfly and flower.  As you can probably imagine, it took more than a little time to cut around the petals of that flower, but I like to think the effect (popped up on Dimensionals) is totally worth it :-)

Another Butterfly

I know, I really need to get off this butterfly kick, but this is just so much fun! Here we have yet another butterfly easel card, this time in Crumb Cake and Rich Razzleberry (how awesome is this combination of colours?).

This time I've blinged these up a little with rhinestones - love these things *g*.

Butterfly Easel Cards

These are just so cute!

I was blog surfing the other night, looking for more ideas using my Beautiful Butterflies Bigz die, and came across this by the talented Bronwyn Eastley. I was intrigued and investigated further - turns out she has a tutorial on her blog on making a slightly smaller version (there is a link at the end of the Faux Fabric Butterfly post).

So easy! So effective!

So naturally I made two *g*

Here's a close up of the Baja Breeze butterfly, which I made following Bronwyn's instructions.

The edges and embossed design are lightly sponged with matching Baja Breeze ink just to emphasise the texture a bit.

I think it probably needs some shimmer spritz ... might have to disassemble it and rectify that.

Do you like the centre? I bought a packet of the Designer Brads ages ago, but never found the right project to put them on until now. The Filigree brads (as shown here) are actually two parts - a small silver brad and a decorative hardware piece to put behind it (in two sizes - the small is shown here).

Cardstock: Baja Breeze

I was so encouraged by my success I tried my hand at making one of these easel cards using the largest butterfly on the die. After a bit of trial and error, I managed to get it to work.

Here is a closeup of the Pink Pirouette butterfly ... as you can see, I went a little further with the decorations on this one, by sparkling up the brad with some Dazzling Diamonds. To do this, I used tweezers to hold the prongs of the brad and smooshed it into my Versamark pad. Then I dipped it into Heat & Stick powder and heated it until the adhesive just melted. Then I dunked it straight into a tub of Dazzling Diamonds and voila! And that stuff is well glued down, too, I checked - it's not going to shed all over the place.

Still might need Shimmer Paint on this one though ...

Vintage Style

I've had this set for some time now, and I can't believe it's taken this long for it to see some ink! It's a Level One hostess set, which means that you can't buy it, but you can earn it for FREE with either a $300 plus order or a $300 plus workshop.

And the beauty of the set? It coordinates with some of the exclusive Stampin' Up! punches, as shown here. I have gone for a soft, vintage feel which suits the style of the stamps, and opted to layer an embossed piece over a background stamped with En Francais (I've been giving my background stamps some love lately *g*).

Who knew that Perfect Plum and Crumb Cake would work so well together?

Supplies used:
Stamp/s: Punch Potpourri, En Francais
Ink: Perfect Plum, Crumb Cake
Cardstock: Crumb Cake, Perfect Plum, Very Vanilla

Watercolour Rose

As you may know, Stampin' Up! Classic Inks are dye based, which means that they will run when wet. Usually you try to keep your work dry and avoid this, but sometimes it can be exactly what you need for your project.

Here, for example, I have stamped the big rose from Fifth Avenue Floral onto watercolour paper which was sprayed with water beforehand. The Regal Rose ink immediately bled out across the paper. Once the piece was dry, I used my Stamp A Ma Jig to restamp the flower in Regal Rose and create this simple yet effective focal point for my card.

Layer it with a few pieces of coordinating cardstock (in this case, more Regal Rose along with Soft Suede and Very Vanilla) and you have this ... I am very happy with the result!

Returning Favourites

If you've had a chance to flick through your copy of the new Idea Book & Catalogue, or checked it out online, you might see that some of the stamp sets are a little familiar.

This time around, we have a number of sets returning from the previous year's Mini Catalogues, including this one, which I love.

It's called I {heart} Hearts, and consists of ... well, hearts. Ten of them to be exact (three are on the one stamp, and coordinate with the Heart ot Heart punch). You can see some stuff I made with this set earlier this year by clicking this link.

Couldn't help myself, I added a touch of embossing to the lower part of the card - did I mention how much I LOVE my Big Shot?

As promised...

The other day I showed you a hint of Vintage Wallpaper - a new embossing folder for your Big Shot. The folder will be available for purchase from September 1 from the new 2010-11 Ideas Book & Catalogue.

Here is another card using this folder, which shows a little more detail. Not a great deal, mind, as it's largely hidden behind the front panel, but you can probably get the idea.

The Stampin' Up! folders are sized to cover (most of) a card front. I personally prefer to use them for layering, but that's just me. And they're reasonably priced - so much so that I am probably going to get another one of these to experiment with (wait and see!).

The card itself was just the result of a table full of stuff, the stamp set "Always" sitting nearby, and a desire to try making something that wasn't pink out of this set. I won!

New Stamp Set ...

So far I haven't really been showing you much new stuff ... I have to admit this is partly because I didn't buy much from our demonstrator-only pre-order (saving my money for next month when the new catalogue is officially released *g*).

However, I do have access to one or two new goodies. As a f'rinstance, this is a stamp from a new set called "Perfect Punches", which all attendees were given (yes, *given*) at the annual Stampin' Up! Convention in May (no one was expecting it; we were all totally blown away by this).

Each stamp in the set of 6 coordinates with a Stampin' Up! punch, and contains a variety of handy phrases such as the "happy birthday" shown here, "Joy at Christmas", "Thanks", "Congratulations" and "my friend".

The card shown here was inspired by a (poorly remembered) sample from the catalogue - I saw it, liked it and tried to replicate it, but then when I saw the original I was astonished that I'd managed to get it so wrong LOL. The sample is much, much nicer, and I will try it again sometime soon.

The more observant of my readers will no doubt already have noticed the other new element on this card ... yup, a new embossing folder to add to my repertoire. This one is called Vintage Wallpaper, and is just lovely. I will show another card featuring a larger sample in a day or two.
