Holiday Catalogue Carry Over

Some people (well, not me) are super organised and like to get their Christmas stamping started mid-year.  With that in mind, you might like to have a look at the list of items which are still available from the 2013 Holiday Catalogue - click here to check out a PDF of the items you can buy, and order through my Online Store or if you prefer, email me to place your order.

These carryover items are only available until August 27 (after that, keep your eye out for a new Holiday Catalogue!)

Christmas Money Slider Wallets

You know how it can get tricky, trying to think of something to give your teenage (or near enough to) nieces and nephews for Christmas?  I'm afraid I'm a bit of a failure as an aunt, and in previous years have used the old standby, gift cards.  This year, I didn't even get that far, figuring that what teenager wants to be told what store he or she can buy their stuff at?  So I went with cold, hard cash.

But what to put it in?  Just a card, sure, I could have done that, but with the amount of "stuff" I have lying about just waiting to be made into something cool, I knew I could do better than that.

After a bit of a dig around with Google (what did we do before Google?  Especially Google Images?) I found something I liked - quick, simple and effective, my favourite three things in a card :-)

And here is my interpretation ...

As you can see, I decided against using ribbon in my version - mostly because I didn't have any ribbon to match the paper I used (well, I thought I didn't - until I'd finished, at which point I remembered I have Gumball Green Stitched Satin ribbon.  Doh!).  I like the little half-circle cutouts, anyway.

I also decided not to decorate the insert, thus giving myself plenty of space to include a Christmas message to my nieces and nephew.

Hope you all enjoyed your Christmas!

We wish you a Merry Christmas

If I have been good and organised, anyone who was going to receive a Christmas card from me has theirs by now, so now I can post my 2012 family Christmas card.

I was feeling a little lazy this year, so went with a very quick but (I like to think) effective design, relying on two different layers of embossed cardstock and the Apothecary Accents framelits for visual appeal.

And it wouldn't be Christmas if I didn't spritz it up with a little Shimmer Paint :-)  Love, love, love that stuff!  You can barely see it in this photo - the Raspberry Ripple layer has been given a light coat of sparkle just for fun.

Have I mentioned just how much I love my embossing folders?  And my framelits?  And pretty much every accessory ever made for the Big Shot?

Merry Christmas to everyone, and a happy 2013!

Merry (Minis) Christmas!

Christmas is nearly upon us, so what better time to show you the card I whipped up the other night?  This is a little too fiddly for me to use as my family card (although had I come up with idea earlier I may well have done so) but it was fun to make :-)

The cute little baubles come from a stamp set in the Holiday Catalogue called Merry Minis - a nine piece set comprising three stars, three baubles and three Christmas trees.  You can also buy a Merry Minis Punch Pack, in other words three little punches which coordinate with the stamps.  I attached these with Dimensionals in an effort to make them look a little more like they were hanging from the embossed detail.

And just for a little visual interest, I used the Simply Scored Diagonal Plate and my Simply Scored Scoring Tool to create a cross-hatch effect along the bottom of the yellow layer.  Now I'm wondering if I should have just embossed the whole layer?  Perhaps I need to make another one to see... :-)

A simple Christmas card

As promised the other day, here is the card I made to send out to the customers of my "day job" - it was a pretty simple design, relying on the Apothecary Accents framelits and the Holiday Frame embossing folder for the "wow" factor.  Not shown here is the Champagne Frost shimmer paint applied to the Crumb Cake layer (as I had to make this one up quickly after sealing up and mailing all the work ones, I forgot that step!), which, trust me, looked very effective :-)

This year I made 111 of these little beauties - I really need to talk to the sales guys, and ask them to tone down their efforts to find new business, or this is going to be the end of me!

Just a quick word - if you like this stamp, called "Heart of Christmas" and want it for your own, it's only available until the end of the Holiday Catgalogue period, January 31, 2013.  It is one of the "a la carte" range, meaning it is a single stamp, not part of a set, so is very affordable :-)

Countdown to Christmas

With only a few days to go, I thought I had better share my Christmas cards for 2011 ... those of you who saw my previous post will recognise this instantly LOL.  Yes, I CASEd myself again this year - it was hard enough coming up with one design I could mass produce, why would I want to try to think of another?

Actually, I did have another idea, but that never really took off - I decided I was trying too hard, and the finished results didn't look ... well, finished.  I might revisit the idea through the year, however - we'll see how keen I get.

As with the cards I made for my employers, I trimmed each edge with the Scallop Border Punch, and embossed them using the Finial Press Embossing Folder.  This time I used my time-saving tip of putting two through the folder at a time from the start ... you may be able to tell from this closeup that the embossed design doesn't look quite as crisp as you would normally expect - this card uses the bottom of the two embossed sheets.

To dress up the cards a little, I spritzed the front flap with a little of my home made shimmer spray (ie. a few drops of Champagne Mist Shimmer Paint in a little spray bottle with some rubbing alcohol) - it looks pretty and smells nice too!

Christmas Cards Galore!

Ho, ho, ho.

That's about as merry as it gets around here at this time of year.  I find myself not feeling terribly Christmassy until the very last minute (although for a wonder I have actually finished all the gift buying early - I know, I couldn't believe it either!).

Each year, I have been asked by my employers to make handmade cards to send out to our customers.  It's only a small company, but that's still in excess of 100 cards - *phew*.  I almost didn't do it this year, as I was a little burnt out after making 100 of these (which I really liked, but not after the first forty or so).  But at the last minute I remembered that our customers have enjoyed these cards in the past, they have come to kind of expect it, and I get paid for my efforts :-)

So without further ado, here is this year's effort.  This isn't all the cards - but you get the idea.  As you can see, I've revisited an old favourite, Season of Joy - still available in this year's catalogue (but sure to retire next year).  It really is a great set, with enough stamps to create quite a variety of looks.  I added a rhinestone to the star of each, just for a little extra "wow".

I made some in Old Olive, some in Pacific Point, and some in Cherry Cobbler (however I teamed the Cherry ones with Very Vanilla rather than Whisper White - love the "vintage" look those to have when they're together.

The cards were a snap to make ... I quickly worked out that I could get three bases out of a sheet of A4 by cutting two 19 x 10.5cm strips from one end, then flipping it 90 degrees and trimming the remaining piece down to 19 x 10.5cm.  Each strip was then scored at 14.8cm, leaving a 4.2cm flap for the front.  Then I just stuck A6 pieces of Whisper White or Very Vanilla behind the (decorated) flaps.

And here is a closeup of one of the cards.  As you can see, I used my Scallop Edge punch down the edge of the flap, and dressed it up by embossing that section with the Finial Press Embossing Folder.  After a time I realised I could put two pieces through the Big Shot at a time - the second piece wasn't embossed quite as deeply, but looked perfect anyway.  Unfortunately, I didn't work this out until I was on the last 18 or so LOL.

Anyway, they all went out in the mail on Friday, and I have already had a couple of comments from the customers - feedback is a wonderful thing!

And in case you're wondering, here are links to Christmas 2009's cards for work, and 2008's as well.  Next year I'm going to start early.  No, honest.

Christmas Gift Card holders, #1

Each year, I give my brother's kids gift cards for Christmas ... as they get older it's hard to know what they particularly want, so I figure they're better off choosing their own gifts at their own pace. So every year I have to think up a new way of presenting the cards. Luckily there are a ton of ideas out there on the net to be inspired by!

You can see past years' gift card holders here and here.

Here's the first of the three holders I made last week. This one is based entirely on this one I made earlier this year. Because it was for my nephew, I had to restrain myself and not cover it with flower stamps and "pretty" things - lucky the owl fits nicely into this category! In retrospect, I should have put a little Christmas hat on him; sadly I didn't think of that until much later.

Here's a closeup of the owl (click to get a better look). You can also see that I spritzed the background with my Champagne Mist shimmer spray (lovin' this stuff!) (click here for a little more detail about the product, about halfway through the post). You can also see a little of the texture of the cardstock - this is the textured type, available as part of the 12x12 packs of single colour cardstock.

And here's the inside ... you can use Velcro to hold the gift card holder closed, but I prefer self adhesive magnets (you can buy this stuff by the sheet from craft stores).

More Christmas cheer

As promised, here's a picture of the Christmas card that my lucky friends and family are going to receive this year.

Rather than think of a new design, I just based this on the card I made for my "real life job" employer to send out to our customers, with a couple of changes. First and most obvious (duh!) is the colours - I have gone for a more traditional red/green look, with a slightly vintage feel (using the vanilla and kraft).

This is a chance to showcase my new favourite colour, Cherry Cobbler ... so pretty ...!

I also used one of the little stamps in the Delightful Decorations sets for the Christmas message in the middle of the bauble, stamped in the new Crumb Cake ink which matches the cardstock formerly known as Kraft.

The one change you can't really see in this photo is the shimmer spray I've used on the vanilla layer. You put a few drops (about 10) of the new Shimmer Paint (page 143 in the 2010-11 Idea Book & Catalogue) in a little spray bottle, top it up with some rubbing alcohol (available in the health & beauty aisle in your supermarket), shake well before each use, and spritz your cardstock for beautiful shine. If it's not sparkly enough, you can respritz when it's dry.

Here's an exteme closeup, where you can actually see the flecks of paint (click for a closer view). If you could see the actual card, you would see that it has a glow about it, and really adds to the overall effect - I'm very happy with this year's efforts!

And you can expect to see a lot more shimmer in my cards - I love this Shimmer Paint!

Christmas is coming ...

... and for a wonder, I'm organised (well, so far).

I have just this week finished the Christmas cards I make annually to send out to the customers of the company I work for - I like to think they appreciate the effort, and of course I am paid for my work and supplies!

This is the card that the lucky customers are getting this year.

I am loving this colour scheme - pick any purple, green and blue, and it just seems to work well together. Here I have used Baja Breeze, Concord Crush and Old Olive - not your traditional Christmas colours, but I like to mix things up a bit *g*.

And I found out something about the Little Leaves Sizzlit. Turns out that using it 120 times in a row makes it stick a little but it still cuts just fine!

I'm still here!

Just been busy with non-stamping stuff lately. Although I have made a start on my my annual commission of 100 cards for my employer to send out to our customers (I get paid for that, by the way). Take a look here, here and here for past years' efforts.

I will be posting a picture of some of the cards in the next day or so. So far I've done 33, only 67 to go! And then I have to make my personal cards. Sigh. Fortunately I receive lovely feedback from recipients, which makes all the work worthwhile.

Don't forget to check out the current special (or try this link, which includes a small picture of the Christmas Cocoa specialty paper), by the way - buy one (or more) of the four bundles on offer and receive a free spool of festive ribbon!

Happy New Year!

Another Christmas has passed, and we can all breathe freely for a little while at least ... while I enjoyed the break, there seems to be a ridiculous amount of pressure attached to Christmas - sorry, just got a little "bah humbug" there *g*.

Anyway, it's now 2010, and so far it's looking like a good year. Then again, it is only the 6th, plenty of time for things to go wrong LOL.

To kick off this year's posts, here is a snap of little gift card holders I whipped up for my nieces and nephew on Christmas Eve (nothing like the last minute for getting things done!). We usually find gift cards or cash are easiest, that way the kids can get whatever they want rather than end up with something lame that Auntie Chris picked up for them.

So each year I try to come up with a smart packaging idea. I was going to make little handbags, but that probably would have annoyed my nephew no end LOL, so after a little research online came up with these little beauties. And do you think I can remember where I got the idea from? Of course not!

Basically, these holders are a strip of cardstock, scored twice, with one side stuck down to create a little pocket. I stuck a piece of white cardstock under the top flap to write my message on.

And look! I've even cut into my precious stash of Designer Series Paper to decorate these - no stamping involved!

Merry Christmas!

Remember a little while ago I posted a Christmas card I'd made, saying it was fun to make, but a little too involved to mass produce?

I changed my mind *g*.

When I broke it down, it didn't really take so long at all. Cutting out the tree was a bit of a pain, but easy enough to do in front of the telly of an evening, and the rest was a snap to put together. I only made 20 so it wasn't too deadly.

And it saved me thinking of a new Christmas design when I'd already come up with this one!

I've used up some of my free Certainly Celery twill ribbon from the September promotion, as well - how serendipitous that this matched my colour scheme. Or did I choose the colour scheme to match the ribbon? Sometimes it's hard to tell which came first *g*.

I love how the Whisper White craft ink looks almost luminous when stamped on lighter coloured cardstocks (or even medium tone as shown here).

It's that time of year again!

Yes, Christmas is only just around the corner! Which means that I should have started and finished making my personal Christmas cards by now (as opposed to the ones that I make for my employer) and have them stacked up neatly ready to be mailed out to my friends and family.

Yep, like that's going to happen.

What actually happens is I start thinking about Christmas cards in September, then spend the next two months thinking I have loads of time, until I realise it's late November and I haven't done a damn thing about it. Like about now, f'rinstance.

As I was playing about the other night trying to think of ideas I turned to a fun colour combination which I've been using a bit lately - pink, orange and brown. Or, in Stampin' Up! talk, that would be Pretty in Pink and/or Regal Rose, Pumpkin Pie and Chocolate Chip. And teamed with my favourite Christmas set, Season of Joy, I've come up with something a little different from the traditional holiday card.

The orange layer gave me the most trouble - it just wasn't working originally until I trimmed it down a little and added the stamped swirls. The edges have been distressed using the little distresser tool from the Cutter Kit, then dragged through the Pumpkin Pie inkpad and sponged until the colour depth around the edges looked "right".

I don't know that I'd mass produce this card - cutting out the tree is awfully fiddly - but it was fun to make!

What have I been working on ...?

Well, mostly these. Okay, so there's only four cards here, but what you can't see is the other 96 which I made recently (with the help of Sharon - thanks Sharon!).

My day job is for a small company which supplies raw materials to label printers. It has become something of a tradition that we send out handmade cards to our customer base (which all began when I first started there and the boss found out I was a cardmaker). At first it was a pretty easy task, but somehow we gathered more customers over the years and I'm wondering what monster has been created LOL.

Anyway, this year Sharon and I put our heads together and came up with this design (which is supposed to look kind of like a branch of a Christmas tree with baubles - or a pleasing abstract design, whichever you like), and we decided to do four different colourways so as not to drive ourselves insane doing 100 cards in the exact same colour scheme.

I like to think that our customers appreciate the effort - we have had some lovely feedback from them in past years, and when printers are liking your work as a cardmaker, you must be doing something right!

Gift Cards

It's that time of year again, when I run out of ideas for what to get for my brother's three kids. So as usual it comes down to gift cards so they can get what they *really* want.

This year we are going to see my brother's family before Christmas so today has been a bit of a rush to get stuff done before tomorrow. Yeah, I've known about it for a few weeks, but the last minute rush is traditional this time of year. If it wasn't for the last minute I'd never get anything done!

The problem with giving gift cards is making them look interesting. After all, they're nothing more than a little piece of plastic, no matter how pretty the pictures are. The solution - make cute little folders to put them in! I used instructions which are found on many websites to create these. Simply cut a strip of cardstock 4-1/2 by 11 inches (I was following US instructions), then score at 3, 5-1/2 and 8 inches. Fold into a W shape and stick the middle bits together at the sides and bottom. Use the Word Window punch to cut a slot out of the centre piece (and punch an extra bit out with a circle punch if you like) and there you have it.

And would you believe I forgot to take a photo of the inside ... if I remember I will sort that out tomorrow and put it up. Duh.

100 Cards ... continued

Okay, because Blogger refused to cooperate the other day, I couldn't upload a close up of one of the cards I made for work. Rather than scratch my head over it all, I have taken the easy way out and scanned a card for you to see. The colours have come out kind of odd, but that is an issue with the scanner and the expanse of white on the card - something else I am not going to fuss about just now *g*.

Anyway, here it is ... a simple design, easy to mass produce (unless you're like me and accidentally stick a few card fronts on backwards *sigh* - my excuse is it was getting a little late and I was socialising at the time instead of paying attention to what I was doing) yet effective.

I'm gonna miss this stamp set *sniffle*. Only a couple more days to go if you want to buy it!

100 Christmas Cards!

You can imagine how happy I was to get this lot finished! Yep, there are 100 cards in that pile.

I'm quite impressed with myself.

The backstory to this is that when I started at my current place of employment, my friend (who coincidentally is the office manager) told the boss I made handmade cards. The next thing I know, I've volunteered myself to make the Christmas cards to send to our customers.

That was 2004, and our customer base has grown somewhat since then, but now it's become something of a tradition that our cards are handmade.

I hope the customers like these ones. I do (but not quite as much as I did before I made 100 of them *g*).

I've been trying to post a closeup of one of the cards, but Blogger isn't playing nicely today and keeps wanting to insert the picture vertically instead of horizontally, no matter how I try to trick it! So I will keep trying to get that sorted, and in the meantime, the card is very similar to the second card in this post, except instead of cutting out the flower, I punched out a round design (in the interests of speed).

Christmas Inspiration

I was blurfing (yes, of course you know what that means ... you're doing it now! Blog surfing, that is) earlier and decided to visit the very talented Marelle Taylor's blog over at thINKspot. Her stuff is simply gorgeous *sigh*. Anyway, I was taken by the card on this post and, because I am actually supposed to be doing something completely different, ended up making this instead.

This is just so easy it's almost embarrassing *g*.

I have a small stash of old copper coins and 1c pieces are the exact right size for this technique. Once I run out of 1c bits, the cards will become 8c dearer to make after I switch to using 5c pieces.

I wonder if I could churn a few of these out for my family Christmas cards this year ...? These spinner cards are so much fun to play with, almost hypnotic. Try one and see!
